OTEC

Thanks to the technologies developed in the field of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), Naval Group is able to offer tropical maritime regions that are not connected to the continental networks the possibility of achieving energy independence.

The principle of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is based on harnessing the difference in temperature in tropical waters between the surface water, which is at about 25°C, and water at a depth of 1,000 metres, which is at 5°C . This temperature difference allows the continuous production of electricity. In the medium term, OTEC will contribute to addressing the growing electricity needs of regions located in the tropics and ensuring their future energy independence. In effect, this innovative solution is a green alternative to so-called “fossil” energy sources (gas, coal), which are still massively used on isolated sites, not connected to the continental electricity networks.

The Indian Navy is keen on introducing the OTEC technology in India as a part of its Green Initiatives which is currently under feasibility stages
